GLOSSARY

  • Source code: The source code of a program is a sequence of logical instructions written by a computer scientist in a programming language.
  • Executable: The task state in which a task is located after its activation and before it is finished.
  • Firefox: is a web browser software developed by Mozilla. Firefox is free software.
  • VLC: VLC media player is a free media player. This software is multiplatform and is distributed under the GNU GPL license. It includes the codecs necessary for reading most audio and video formats. In addition, the reader is able to read a large number of network flows.
  • Libreoffice: is a free and free office suite, derived from the OpenOffice.org project, created and managed by The Document Foundation.
  • Interoperability: The ability of multiple business units to cooperate to process data.
  • GNU / Linux: is an operating system that is completely free and is the product of a large number of companies and volunteers contributing to its development.
  • Linux: is the kernel of the GNU / Linux operating system (the kernel is the heart of the system, it is he who is in charge of providing the software with a programming interface to use the hardware).
  • GNU: is a set of utility programs.
  • Apache: is the most popular server on the Internet. This is a basic application on Unix-like operating systems, but has now been ported to many other systems.
  • Php or Hypertext Preprocessor: is a free programming language, mainly used to produce dynamic web pages via an HTTP server, but can also work like any other language interpreted locally. PHP is an imperative object-oriented language.
  • MySql: is a relational database management system (RDBMS). It is distributed under a dual GPL license and owner. It is one of the most widely used database management software in the world.
  • Unix: is a multi-tasking and multi-user operating system created in 1969 by Kenneth Thompson. It is based on an interpreter or supervisor (the shell) and many small utilities, each performing a specific action, switchable between them (« redirection » mechanism) and called from the command line.
  • Richard Stallman: is an American programmer and activist of free software. Initiator of the free software movement, he launched, in 1983, the GNU project and the GNU General Public License also known by the acronym GPL.
  • Copyleft: general method to make free a program (or any other work) and to force all modified or extended versions of this program to be free as well.
  • Linus Torvalds: is an American-Finnish computer scientist known for having created in 1991 the Linux kernel of which he continues to direct the development. He is considered the « benevolent dictator ».
